SERP preview tool for product pages

See how a product or collection page could look in Google’s desktop results, and check whether the title and meta description are likely to be cut short. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

How long should a product title be?

Google doesn’t publish a character limit. Desktop results cut titles by width, at roughly 600 pixels, which is often 50 to 60 characters. Wide letters like W and M use more space than i and l, which is why this tool measures pixels, not characters.

Put the product name and its most-searched detail first, so the important part survives if the end is cut.

A title pattern for product pages

A pattern that works for most stores:

Product name – key detail | Brand

  • Stonewashed Linen Duvet Cover – King Size | Your Store
  • Merino Crew Neck Jumper – Charcoal | Your Store

Keep each title unique. Hundreds of products sharing one template with only the name changed is a common reason pages compete with each other.

Why Google rewrites titles and descriptions

Google can show a different title or snippet when it thinks other text on the page answers the search better. Descriptions are rewritten more often than titles.

Clear, specific and unique titles and descriptions that match what the page actually offers make rewrites less likely.

Getting price and stock into results

Product structured data and an accurate Merchant Center feed let Google show details like price and availability with your result. The product details line in the preview shows roughly where they appear.

The cut-off widths in this tool are approximations for desktop results. Google doesn’t publish exact limits and changes its layout over time.
